An estimated 70% of Afghanistan's rural population are engaged in agriculture, with the sector identified as one of the primary sources of income for rural households. Northern Afghanistan is considered the country's bread basket region, with the region endowed with natural assets that enable agricultural development. To ensure that Afghanistan ensures that the country's agriculture is effectively utilized and that the country has the necessary human resource expertise in agriculture, President Ghani committed to establishing a specialized agricultural University in Kunuz province (located in Northern Afghanistan).
