Promise Background
Afghanistan has the second highest maternal and infant mortality rates in the world. This situation is partly due to an a substantial lack of female health care providers that limits access of mothers to skilled birth attendants. During his pre-election campaign, President Ghani committed to increasing the number of female doctors and nurses as part of the effort to reduce maternal and child mortality rates in Afghanistan.
