NATO forces and the U.S. Government have provided much needed security and economic assistance to the Afghan Government to promote stability in Afghanistan and within the region. During his pre-election campaign, President Ghani committed to maintaining and furthering relationships with NATO and U.S. to assist Afghanistan's security forces.

Status Details:  

May, 2015: NATO Foreign Ministers announced Wednesday that the alliance would maintain its presence in Afghanistan once the current Resolute Support mission ends.

At the end of the first day of a two-day meeting in Antalya, Turkey, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg said the alliance and the Afghan leaders agreed on a framework for the future joint military-civilian presence in Afghanistan - which will be aimed at training, advising and assisting Afghan forces.

March, 2015: Following President Ghani's and Chief Executive Abdullah Abdullah's visit to Washington in March 2015, the U.S. committed to the continued funding of all 352,000 Afghan forces until 2017, keeping the current posture of 9,800 U.S. troops in Afghanistan until the end of 2015 and an aid package of $800 million USD to the unity government's reform agenda were among the new Obama commitments to Afghanistan."
